than a dry feeling.
Your tear film keeps the surface of your eyes smooth and comfortable. When you don’t produce enough tears, or they evaporate too quickly, that delicate balance can break down.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common contributor. These tiny eyelid glands supply the protective oil layer that slows tear evaporation. Thickened oil, blocked glands and inflammation can leave your eyes irritated—even when they’re watering.
Sound familiar?
Screen use, indoor heating, wind, certain medications, hormonal changes and eyelid conditions can contribute. A dry eye evaluation helps distinguish these causes from allergies and other eye problems.
Let’s understand your symptoms ↗A multimodal approach
to dry eye.
Dry eye often has overlapping causes. A multimodal approach brings together complementary treatments to support your tear film, eyelid glands and ocular surface—based on what your eyes need.

to tear retention.
LACRIFILL® canalicular gel
LACRIFILL is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel placed by your doctor into the tear drainage channels. By reducing drainage, it helps your own tears remain on the eye’s surface longer. It works differently from drops, which add moisture, and from IPL or RF, which focus on eyelid-related contributors.
When we may consider it
Tear conservation may be appropriate when insufficient tear volume contributes to your symptoms. Your doctor evaluates your ocular surface, drainage system and current medications before recommending it.
What the visit involves
Your doctor introduces the gel through the tear duct opening in a brief office procedure. Numbing drops may be used. The gel is designed to remain in place for up to six months, with follow-up and removal or retreatment determined by your doctor.
What to keep in mind
Possible complications include irritation, discomfort, excessive tearing and infection. Tear retention can also increase exposure to eye medications, so your doctor may need to adjust your regimen. Improvement and duration vary.

With a purpose.
Lumecca IPL
Intense pulsed light uses carefully selected pulses of broad-spectrum light on the skin around the eyes. In selected patients, IPL can help address inflammatory and vascular factors associated with MGD-related dry eye, including those seen with ocular rosacea.
Why the eyelids matter
Inflammation around the eyelid margin can interfere with the glands that supply your tears’ oil layer. IPL may help improve gland function and tear stability. Your doctor may pair treatment with gland expression to help release thickened oils.
What treatment feels like
Protective eye shielding is essential. After preparing your skin, your provider delivers brief light pulses to the planned treatment areas. You may feel warmth or a quick snapping sensation. A series of visits is often recommended, followed by reassessment and maintenance when appropriate.
Is IPL right for everyone?
No. Skin tone, recent tanning, light-sensitive conditions and photosensitizing medications affect suitability. Temporary redness, swelling or tenderness may occur; burns, pigment changes and eye injury are possible. Your provider reviews precautions and gives personalized sun-protection and aftercare instructions.

Forma RF / Forma-I
Forma-I uses radiofrequency energy to deliver controlled warmth to the eyelid area. This heat can help soften thickened oils in the meibomian glands, supporting oil release and the protective layer of your tear film.
A focused approach to MGD
When obstructed glands contribute to rapid tear evaporation, office-based warming may be part of your care plan. Gland expression may be recommended after treatment. RF cannot guarantee recovery of glands that have been permanently lost.
What to expect
A provider moves an applicator over the treatment area while monitoring temperature and comfort. Patients may experience a warm massage-like sensation. The number and spacing of visits depend on your exam findings and response.
Why combine RF and IPL?
RF provides controlled heat, while IPL targets light-responsive inflammatory and vascular contributors. For selected patients, combining them may address more than one part of MGD. LACRIFILL may separately be considered when tear conservation is also needed.
Temporary redness, swelling or discomfort may occur; burns are possible. Medical history, implanted electronic devices and other contraindications require review. Your doctor will explain the exact device, its cleared indications and any off-label dry eye use for IPL or RF before treatment.

A plan built around your eyes.
| Treatment | Primary approach | What your doctor evaluates |
|---|---|---|
| LACRIFILL® | Reduce tear drainage | Tear volume, ocular surface health and drainage anatomy |
| Lumecca IPL | Light-based treatment of contributing inflammatory and vascular factors | MGD, ocular rosacea, skin type and light sensitivity |
| Forma RF | Controlled heat to soften thickened gland oils | Gland obstruction, eyelid health and RF contraindications |
These treatments are not interchangeable. Your evaluation determines whether one, a combination, or a different approach is appropriate.

A closer look
We review your symptoms, contact lens use, medications and daily environment, then assess your tear film, ocular surface and eyelid glands. Additional testing may be recommended.
A clear plan
Your doctor explains the findings and recommends care suited to your eyes. We discuss the proposed procedures, alternatives, visit schedule and costs before you decide.
Ongoing support
We monitor symptoms and clinical signs and adjust your plan. Dry eye is often chronic; home care and maintenance may remain important even when you feel better.
Advanced care.
Everyday support.
LACRIFILL, Lumecca IPL and Forma RF can play a valuable role in your individual dry eye routine. By addressing specific contributors to dryness, these procedures may help reduce your dependence on both prescription and over-the-counter eye drops. The goal is a personalized, sustainable routine that supports more comfortable eyes throughout your day.
Your plan may also include eyelid hygiene, warm compresses, lubricating drops, prescription therapy or treatment of related conditions. The amount of drop use you can reduce depends on your diagnosis and response to treatment; some patients will continue to need ongoing medication.
Screen breaks, complete blinking and reducing exposure to fans or dry air may also help. Keep using prescribed treatments unless your doctor advises a change, and bring a list of your medications to your visit.
Dry eye, explained.
Why do my eyes water if they’re dry?
An irritated eye can produce reflex tears. Watering does not always mean your tear film has the right balance of oil and moisture. Your doctor can check for dry eye and other causes of tearing.
How do I know which procedure I need?
Start with a dry eye evaluation. Symptoms alone cannot tell us whether tear deficiency, gland dysfunction, inflammation or another condition is responsible. Treatment follows the findings rather than a one-size-fits-all package.
Will I still need eye drops?
Possibly. These procedures are part of an individualized dry eye routine and may help reduce dependence on both prescription and over-the-counter drops. Results vary, and some patients still need drops for ongoing control. Your doctor will reassess your eyes and guide any changes—do not reduce or stop prescribed drops on your own.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Response varies by treatment, severity and underlying cause. Some changes may be noticed sooner; IPL and RF plans often involve a series of visits and improvement over time. No procedure guarantees complete or permanent relief.
Are these treatments covered by insurance?
Lumecca IPL and Forma RF are out-of-pocket treatments at SoLo Eye Care. LACRIFILL is often reimbursed by medical insurance, depending on your plan, medical necessity and benefit requirements. Coverage is not guaranteed, and deductibles, copays or coinsurance may apply. Our team can help review your benefits and explain expected costs before treatment.
Can I have IPL, RF and LACRIFILL together?
They may be included in the same overall plan when different contributors are present. Your doctor determines which treatments to combine and how to sequence them. More treatment is not automatically better.
When should I seek urgent eye care?
Sudden vision loss, significant eye pain, marked light sensitivity or a very red eye requires prompt assessment. Contact an eye care professional urgently instead of waiting for a routine dry eye visit.
